carbon footprint

Carbon footprint. The first lecture with DR Izyan was quite interesting, which the main topic of discussion was carbon footprint, I did not hear about it before and didn`t have any idea about this whether its meaning, how its works, and what effect on the natural environment. However, after two hours of being in class and listening to the lecture`s clarification, I realize carbon footprint is one of nature issue that had been associated with household, organization, event, or product since thousand of centuries ago. Thus, after long research in Mr.Google and a plethora of websites, I found a lot of things in environmental issues related to carbon footprints, thus my blog this time will reveal a few things within carbon footprints topic also my action to be considered in order to reduce the carbon footprints in daily life.

Carbon footprint can be defined as total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, service, or product.Greenhouse gases consist of carbon cases like carbon dioxide and methane, which can be emitted through the burning of fossil fuels, land clearance ,consumption of food, manufactured, goods, materials, wood, roads, building,
transportation, and other services. The total carbon footprint cannot be calculated precisely due to a lack of knowledge and data about the complex interactions between contributing processes, including the influence of natural processes that store or release carbon dioxide.

How a  carbon  footprint  works ?
Footprints offer clues about where humans came from and where they headed. Their impressions tell something about the animals that leave them. But while actual footprints offer details on size, weight, and speed, carbon footprints measure how much carbon dioxide (CO2) has been produced just by going about people`s daily lives. A drive to work, a flip of a light switch, and a flight out of town all rely on the combustion of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. When fossil fuels burn, they emit greenhouse gases like CO2 that contribute to global warming. The usage of home electricity also has contributed to the carbon footprint produced as well as the transportation that emits fuel, diesel, and gasoline. Thus, the consumption of food among the human in daily life for every minute and hours also contribute continuously in producing carbon footprints. Furthermore, ninety-eight percent of atmospheric Co2  comes from the combustion of fossil fuels which become the vast majority of carbon footprint to be produced. It is no doubt that the major cause of carbon footprint comes from our daily activity, whether the routine that we can control or not. The video below illustrates  how the carbon footprint has been produced in human`s daily life.

What a person can do to reduce the carbon footprint?

It a big priority for every individual to have awareness and concern towards the problem of carbon footprint can cause, also the negative impacts that could happen within decades or centuries over the world in the future. Honestly, I never realize that every activity throughout my life could contribute to the enhancement or decline of the carbon footprint. However, the discussion that has been done in the last class gave me a view that my carbon footprint could be reduced if I take a sort of action in the future also, an effort to keep the earth stay green. Here I list some of them :

1. Practice the 3 R`s :
Reuse, reduce and recycle are the best term to provide for a green earth and help to reduce the carbon footprint effect or greenhouse emission.I can reuse every item surround me by keeping it in great condition, repairing or upcycling it when breaks.
For example, I can reuse the plastic bags as trash bins, pet waste bags or reuse it at the grocery store. As we know there is plenty of reuse bags or shopping bag sold in the market which we can get it easily.  Otherwise, every item from plastic, paper, glass or metal could be recycle in recycle place.

2. Bike more and drive less :
Vehicle emitted multiple dangerous gases and toxic that can endanger the atmosphere and human being circumstances. Since, the number of vehicles on the road rapidly increase over the years, it will cause more consequences in the future. Riding a bicycle or having an incorporate walk to any destination in a day can decrease the carbon footprint as well as utilize muscle power. Since my hometown is a village, it would be suited for me to ride a bicycle that emits zero toxic or walking instead of using a car or motorcycle.

3. Reduce electricity use:

The best way to reduce the electric power is by turning off lights, fan whenever you not using them. Turn off the appliances at the power outlet also can help to reduce the electricity use or putting them to sleep is second best. Furthermore, unplug any devices even your devices isn`t charging also could decrease the energy or carbon footprint produced. This method is the easiest way for me to practice at home while this is not requiring big energy to do it indeed.

4.Use public transport :
Switching to public transportation rather than private cars or motorcycles is one of the most effective actions individuals can take to reduce the carbon footprint. The environmental benefits of public transportation play a big role in greenhouse gas reductions. If car transportation alone accounts high percentage of the carbon footprint of a typical household, it would be a significant reduction of greenhouse gases if every person in the household switch to take public transport in daily activity. Public transport such as rail transit systems powered by electricity can recognized as the most efficient public transport in coping with the greenhouse problem or human's carbon footprint. For my current situation, I refer to take the public bus like rapid kuantan to go anywhere because of its affordable and accessible in my living place.

Individual role and Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The 17 SDGs are integrated—that is, they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. Through the pledge to Leave No One Behind, countries have committed to fast-track progress for those furthest behind first. That is why the SDGs are designed to bring the world to several life-changing ‘zeros’, including zero poverty, hunger, AIDS and discrimination against women and girls. In order to fulfill these global goals, the countries involved, the international authorities and the global community,  need to work together, cooperating with each other, and have same desire to achieve these global desires towards 2030.
